About UP DOST-SA

Organization Profile

The UP DOST-SA can trace its humble beginnings to a small group of scholars in UP Diliman in 1975. It was formally and officially recognized on November 17, 1979, with the name University of the Philippines National Science Development Board (UP NSDB SA). Since then, the organization has changed its name twice: University of the Philippines National Science and Technology Scholars’ Association (UP NSTA SA) in 1983 and to its current name University of the Philippines Department of Science and Technology Scholars’ Association (UP DOST-SA) in 1987.

In a span of almost three decades, the UP DOST-SA has striven to protect the interest and welfare of its members, serving as a supplement to each member’s overall development while ardently engaging in different programs and activities advancing its objectives to promote and improve science and technology education and awareness in the country.

In lieu with this, SA handles the bridge program for the incoming DOST scholars (within the NCR), through Summer Orientation and Enrichment Program (SOEP). It also facilitates one of the most prestigious NCR-wide inter-highschool sciences competition, the SciQuiz. On its 23rd year, the Sciquiz (which was then a university-wide inter-block freshman quiz show) aims to be a means of discovering the future math and science wizards of the Philippines.

But, the UP DOST-SA does not fail to give back. Due to this overwhelming success, SA has managed to put up the Sponsor-A-Kid (SA-Kid) as a means of service and awareness program for children. Starting this year, the SA Kid becomes a semestral activity to be able to reach out to more children and students.

Other activities of the organization are the Science Exposion Tours (Sex Tours), the Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE) which are both done semestrally; and the Popular Culture, Science, Literature and etc. (PopScicLE Quiz Show).

Through the years, SA has grown steadily and improved progressively, with its members and alumni, here and abroad, amassing a significant number of awards and achievements, not only in the fields of sciences and engineering, but also in other fields of expertise — exhibiting the UP DOST-SA as an organization that lasts the test of time.

Truly, an organization aiming for excellence from 1979 to infinity and beyond!
